The Foote-class torpedo-boat, USS Winslow (Torpedo Boat #5), was commissioned on December 29, 1897, at Baltimore, Maryland.   Operating off Virginia in February when the battleship USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor, Cuba, she departed to serve off Cuba during the Spanish-American War.  On May 11, she engaged Spanish forces and was damaged at the Battle of Cardenas.  The battle also resulted in the first American killed during the war with Spain when Ensign Worth Bagley was killed by incoming enemy fire.  Repaired at the New York Navy Yard and recommissioned in June 1901, Winslow was homeported at Naval Torpedo Station, Newport, Rhode Island, for the next few years.   In and out of commission at New York Navy Yard, she was also utilized by the Massachusetts Naval Militia at Charlestown from June to November 1909.  Winslow was decommissioned on July 12, 1910, at Boston Navy Yard, Massachusetts, and sold in January 1911.
