Sinking of U-117
1943: August 7: Sinking of German U-boat, U-117
On August 7, 1943, TBF's and F4F's, Composite Squadron One (VC-1) based onboard USS Card (CVE-11) sank the German (Type XB) U-boat, U-117, west of the Azores. During her service, U-117 damaged the U.S. merchant ship, SS Matt W. Ransom on April 11, 1943 by previously laid mines. German (Type IXC) U-boat, U-66, was also attacked on this date but survived. On May 6, 1944, U-66 was sunk by aircraft from USS Block Island (CVE-21) and by depth charges from USS Buckley (DE-51).
