Sinking of U-801
1944: March 17: Sinking of German U-boat, U-801
On March 17, 1944, TBF "Avenger" aircraft from Composite Squadron Six (VC-6) based onboard USS Block Island (CVE-21), along with USS Corry (DD-463) and USS Bronstein (DE-189) sank German (Type IXC) U-boat, U-801, in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Cape Verdes. The U-boat did not sink any Allied vessels or warships on her war patrols.
