1942: July 7: Sinking of German U-boat, U-701
United States Army Air Force A-28 Hudson aircraft sank German (Type VIIC) U-boat, U-701, in the North Atlantic off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, on July 7, 1942. An active U-boat, she sank 9 Allied vessels, including the U.S. Navy trawler, USS YP-389, on June 19, 1942, and damaged 5 Allied vessels, including USS Bainbridge (DD-246) on June 15, 1942. Repaired, Bainbridge returned to escort duty and was sold in November 1945. On the NHHC Navy Library online site, one can read U-701 crew interrogations by Naval Intelligence.
