Operation Ten-Go: May 27-29, 1945
Okinawa Campaign: Operation Ten-Go: Kamikaze Attacks: May 27-29, 1945
The eighth Japanese Kamikaze attack of Operation Ten-Go occurred May 27-29, 1945. As with the prior attacks, numerous U.S. Navy ships were damaged, along with collisions and friendly fire. U.S. Navy ships lost: USS Drexler (DD-741) and the large craft support vessel - LSC(L)-119. Notable U.S. Navy ships damaged: USS Anthony (DD-515), USS Braine (DD-630), USS Sandoval (APA-194), USS Shubrick (DD-639), USS Southard (DMS-10), and USS Tatum (APD-81). In this series of attacks, Japanese submarine I-367 damaged USS Gilligan (DE-508) and a Japanese suicide plane, which was reported as an ALF - a twin-float, single-engine bi-plane, crashed into U.S. freighter SS Mary A. Livermore. Our photograph collections do not have images of this specific attack.
