Weapons
Title: Weapons
Caption: Top to bottom: 1. British naval cutlass by Bate; so marked on 29" S.E. blade bearing GR cypher. Blade has been tinned, possibly in early 1800s, to protect against rusting. All iron guard and grip of British pattern, grip with horizontal fluting, painted black. 2. American cutlass, iron guard typical of Revolutionary War period, fluted grip of maple in characteristic American design, no maker's name. The workmanship and lack of maker's name definitely confirm American provenance. 3. Colonial period cutlass, iron guard with clamshell design, green horn grip, S.E. broad blade. type much used in Caribbean and identified with that area.
