Dogs have been loyal companions to humans since ancient times. Descended from wolves, domesticated dogs are loyal and trainable. They served many purposes on ships at sea, ranging from guarding the deck to keeping watch over sailors on shore in dangerous war zones.

Scot Christenson is currently director of communications for the U.S. Naval Institute Press. He began his career as a television producer and journalist before developing and managing media strategies for a wide range of organizations, including amusement parks, zoos, think tanks, and lobbying firms. He has written about history and pop culture for several periodicals. He lives in Alexandria, Virginia.
