LC-Lot-799-32: Grumman F6F Hellcats, September 1943

LC-Lot-799-32: Grumman F6F Hellcats, September 1943. More Climb and More Speed. Leathery-looking wings of the Navy’s Grumman F6F “Hellcat” plane stretch out over the clouds and mountain peaks to make this pretty picture. “More climb and more speed,” the early combat heroes of the U.S. Navy demanded. The Hellcat is the answer. The sturdy, well-armed and armored fighter is powered by a new high-altitude Pratt and Whitney engine, described as the most powerful aircraft Navy combat flying has known, September 9, 1943. U.S. Navy photograph. Courtesy of the Library of Congress.
