NMUSN-5165: USS Macon (ZRS-5), possibly March 1934

NMUSN-5165: USS Macon (ZRS-5), possibly March 1934. Port and Starboard yaw guys are out, the main mooring cable connected, and Macon floats over Moffett Field’s mast ready for mooring. Her foremost propellers, Nos. 7 and 8, are tilted down for vertical thrust. When the engines are brought up to speed the mooring winch will haul her down to the mast. The wire on her hull which loops under her bow is a radio antenna which ran around the hull. At the forward and her port keel passageway a sailor’s head can be seen sticking out a hatch. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Museum of the U.S. Navy.
