NMUSN-5169: USS Macon (ZRS-5), October 1933

NMUSN-5169: USS Macon (ZRS-5), October 1933. In the upper portion of the photograph, Macon rests with her tail on the stern beam, preparatory to take-off at Moffet Field, October 26, 1933. Notice that four of her eight propellers have been tilted downward to provide vertical thrust. It may be worth nothing that the large external balancing surfaces on the Macon’s rudders and elevators exceed the wingspan of one of her F9C fighters. At left is a schematic stern view of an airship on the stern beam, photo-copied from Calvin Bolster’s patent. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Museum of the U.S. Navy.
