208-COM-226:  Artwork on Doris Miller and Elvin Bell for their heroism, 1941-1942.   Artwork by Charles H. Alston.  Miller received the Navy Cross for his actions at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese Attack on December 7, 1941.   During the Battle of the Coral Sea, Machinist’s Mate Apprentice Third Class Elvin Bell, USN, received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his heroism for saving three other Sailors during an explosion onboard USS Lexington (CV-2) after being hit by Japanese bombs during the Battle of the Coral Sea on May 8, 1942.   Also included is Messman Charles French who saved a raft full of shipmates through shark-infested waters.  Official War of Information photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
