USN 709021:    WAVES and friends on liberty, October 1953. For the first time in history, the U.S. Navy has accepted volunteers for duty on the high seas from women in the enlisted WAVES.  Those eligible were WAVES of the Hospital Corps to fill sixty-three billets on ships of the Military Sea Transportation Service.  Photograph released October 26, 1953.
