USN 709026: Liberty Expires for WAVES, October 1953. A few minutes before the girls’ liberty was up, their sailor escorts returned the WAVES to their ship, USNS George M. Goethals (T-AP-182). The two young ladies thanked their escorts for a pleasant time. In a reversal of usual Navy routine, the WAVES reported onboard their ship (in background) – this time, the boys were “left behind.” Left to right: Paluzzi, LaFreniere, Myers and Baker. For the first time in history, the U.S. Navy has accepted volunteers for duty on the high seas from women in the enlisted WAVES. Those eligible were WAVES of the Hospital Corps to fill sixty-three billets on ships of the Military Sea Transportation Service.
