USN 709565: U.S. Navy WAVE Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Nancy Jane Ellifrit, March 1956. Ellifrit displays her shooting ability at the Park Police Range in Washington before departing for the National Mid-Winter Pistol Meet at Tampa, Florida that March. Lieutenant Ellifrit was the only WAVE participating in the meet. She has been shooting since she joined the U.S. Navy in August 1952 and is qualified in 22, 38, and 45-caliber pistols. She has attended the Nationals for the past three years as a member of a Bureau of Ordnance Team composed of these WAVES and a the wife of a U.S. Navy Commander. Ellifrit won the Virginia State Women’s Championship the last year. Photograph released March 7, 1956. Official U.S. Navy photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
