80-G-205473: USS Enterprise (CV-6). 1943. Crash landing of F6F #30, piloted by Ensign Bryon M. Johnson on the flight deck while enroute to attack Makin Island in the Gilbert Islands. Lieutenant Walter L. Chewning, USNR, catapult officer, clambering up the side of the plane to assist pilot Ensign Johnson, from the flaming cockpit. Johnson escaped with little personal damage. Photograph released November 10, 1943. Official U.S. Navy photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2016/11/15).
