LC-DIG-HEC-39092:  SS Bear of Oakland, Washington Navy Yard, 1935.    SS Bear of Oakland brings Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd into Washington Navy Yard, May 13, 1935.   Photographed by Harris and Ewing.   Bear of Oakland used to be in service with both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard.  The ship was purchased by Byrd, and after the Second Byrd Expedition, allowed the U.S. Navy to use the ship.  The steam powered sailing ship was utilized during World War Ii and destined to be a floating restaurant when she sank while being towed  in the Atlantic in the early 1960s.
