306-NT-40936-FO:  Surrender of Germany, May 1945.   British sailors in New York City, New York, read report of Germany’s surrender.  Three British seaman read the Associated Press report of Germany’s unconditional surrender as it appeared in New York City newspapers on May 7, 1945.  They stand before a newsstand in Times Square, where thousands of New Yorkers collected to celebrate the end of the war in Europe.  Next day, May 8, loudspeakers in Times Square carried the voice of U.S. President Harry S. Truman to the crowds, as he officially proclaimed Germany’s “final and unconditional surrender.”  Citing the war against Japan, President Truman said, “I call upon every American to stick to his post until the last battle is won.   Until that day, let no man abandon his post or slacken his efforts.”    U.S. Information Agency photograph, now in the collection of the National Archives.  (2015/03/17).
