80-G-43298:  Operation Husky, July-August 1943.   Lieutenant Howard L. Kleinoeder, USCG, was the first LCI group to enter Bizerete, Tunisia, the first to enter Palermo, Sicily, and the first to invade Italy.  Skipper of an invasion ship, he has added to his list of priorities by being the first to bring home a report of the Coast Guard’s part in the invasion to Coast Guard Headquarters.  Lieutenant Kleinoeder has seen service in the Pacific, Alaskan waters, the North Atlantic, Africa, Sicily, and Italy since joining the Coast Guard early in the war.
