80-G-45670:  Normany Invasion, Rhino Ferry, June 1944.   “Rhino Ferries,” designed by Navy’s Civil Engineering Corps to bridge the gap between ship and shore, are pontoons owered by two outboard motors of 143 hp and complete with steering gear.  Ferries are formed of 30 pontoons in length by 6’ wide, displaced approximately 275 tons, speed of about 4 knots and a shallower draft than LST’s.   Consisting of a series of five by seven by five cubes of welded steel, pontoons can withstand loads equal to civil highway bridges.   Photograph released June 6, 1944.
