80-G-41840: Battle of Attu, May 11-29, 1943

80-G-41840: Aleutian Islands Campaign, June 1942 - August 1943. Battle of Attu, May 11-29, 1943. Aerial of Japanese positions on Attu, Aleutian Islands. United States Navy photographers flew over the Japanese position on Attu Island, making pictures at will during the last days of the organized Japanese resistence there. These two pictures were made as the foe was being driven back and into the Chicagof Harbor valley, his last stronghold. Along the crest and in the bowl (foreground) are Japanese trails and foxholes in the snow, as well as holes from American firing. The foe was making a stand along the ridge before being driven back to Chicagof Harbor valley, which is straight down from the ridge (upper left). The scene was southwest of Chicagof Harbor, looking northeast. Photographed May 24, 1943. U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2016/05/10).
