208-PU-70A-5:   Battle for Iwo Jima, February 1945.   Secretary Forrestal Confers with Admiral Nimitz and Vice Admiral Turner.   Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal talks with Vice Admiral Richmond K. Turner, USN, Commander of the Iwo Jima expeditionary force, at the airport at Saipan, just after the Secretary’s arrival by plane from Washington, D.C.   At the right, Second Lieutenant James F. Perlowin gets an autograph from Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, USN, Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean Areas.  Secretary Forrestal watched the invasion of Iwo Jima from Vice Admiral Turner’s Flagship and went ashore on the volcanic island to view at first hand the fiery battle between Marines and Japanese for control of that important stepping stone to Tokyo.
