127-GW-520-129356A: Okinawa Campaign, April-June 1945

127-GW-520-129356A: Okinawa Campaign, April-June 1945. “Rockets Away”. Making a run over Japanese positions on Okinawa, a Marine Corsair cuts loose eight five-inch rockets, comparable to a full broadside from a destroyer. This unusual photograph was made by Marine First Lieutenant David D. Duncan from a plexi-glass nosed belly tank slung under the wing of a P-38. The concussion from the rocket blast blew the photo ship over on its right wing and almost caused it to crash into the target area, undated. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2014/6/25).
