208-MO-Box-113-Okinawa-1:  Okinawa Campaign, April-June 1945.   Former Japanese Dugout on Okinawa Now In American Hands.  This dugout was used as a living quarters by high-ranking Japanese officers before U.S. Tenth Army forces engulfed this area of Okinawa, main Ryukyu island 375 miles from Japan.  The Americans landed on Okinawa in April 1945.  By June 10, the Japanese were compressed into an area of about 16 square miles at the southern tip of the island, and were fighting fiercely to hold the last high ground still in their hands.
