80-G-43404: Battle of Kula Gulf, July 5-6, 1943.   Lieutenant Commander John L. Chew, USNR, who, after USS Helena (CL-50) was sunk in the Battle of Kula Gulf, helped to inspire a group of more than 50 survivors and lead them to Vella Lavella Island from which they were rescued.   Received October 2, 1943.    U.S. Navy photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.  (2017/02/28).
