80-G-41220:  Lieutenant Colonel Richard C. Mangum, Major John L. Smith (Medal of Honor recipient), and Captain Marion R. Carl, all USMC, are seated left to right at a press conference in the Navy Department, Washington, D.C., shortly after their return from Guadalcanal, May 1943.  Smith received the Medal of Honor for his actions during August 21 to September 15, when he shot down 16 enemy planes, contributing to Japan’s inability to drive U.S. forces from Guadalcanal.   .
