80-G-43480: Navy Cross: Captain Walter S. McIhenny, USMC

80-G-43480:   Captain Walter S. McIhenny, USMC, is shown wearing the Navy Cross awarded to him “for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession” during the Battle of Guadalcanal on August 27, 1942.    He organized a volunteer party to advance and evacuate a group of wounded men.  Armed with a rifle and under heavy enemy fire, he silenced a machine gun nest and covered the advance and withdrawal of the rescue party.  At the time, he was ill and suffering from a high fever.
