Description: It took the Marine Corps more than twenty years longer than the Navy to wing its first female naval aviator because unlike the Navy, the Marines did not operate many aircraft in non-combat roles. First Lieutenant Sarah Deal received her wings of gold in April 1995, following the rescinding of the ban on women flying in combat, eventually flying the CH-53E Super Stallion heavy lift helicopter. One of Deal’s successors in Marine helicopter aviation, Captain Cera Benbow flew UH-1 “Huey” helicopters with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron (HMLA) 169 during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
