Caption: Top to bottom: 1. Brass-hilted gold plate American short sword, d-guard, SE blade with false edge, 28 1/4" by 1 7/16". Extremely wide blade suggests naval use. Pommel is primitive or colonial version of British lion. 2. Silver hilted American short sword, Philadelphia style eagle pommel, from Delaware Bay-Philadelphia area. SE blade 26 3/4" by 1 1/4". White ivory grip. No maker's name. Type used as either naval or foot officer's sword. Shorter than cavalry type. 3. British naval officer's sword, brass hilt, white sharkskin or ray grips, brass-mounted metal scabbard, 28" SE cutlass blade by Bate, so marked, with GR cypher of George III. Not a standard type, as there was no real standardization then. Apparently made to order.
