LC-Lot 9431-18: Heroes of the Philippines, December 1941

LC-Lot 9431-18: Heroes of the Philippines, December 1941. General Douglas MacArthur pins the Distinguished Service Cross on a member of his forces – Captain Jesus Villamor, the first Filipino hero to receive the high award. This picture, taken soon after the Japanese invasion, is among the first photographs received of action during the war in the Philippines. The Distinguished Service Cross is the U.S. Army’s version of the Navy Cross. Villamor received the award for his actions in December 1941. The Philippines would fall in the spring of 1942 to the Japanese, and U.S. would not return until October 1944. The U.S. Navy would play a vital part in returning the Philippines back to the Allies. Office of War Information photograph. Courtesy of the Library of Congress.
