USN 709038: Navy Accepts Women Volunteers for Duty on High Seas, October 1953. Evenings and spare time isn’t always spent in recreation. In their cabin on board USNS George M. Goethals (T-AP-182) , both WAVES have personal things to care for. While Hospital Corpsman Third Class Maria A. Myers ponders over what to say in that special letter, Hospital Corpsman Second Class Eileen Paluzzi irons her smock. For the first time in history, the U.S. Navy has accepted volunteers for duty on the high seas from women in the enlisted WAVES. Those eligible were WAVES of the Hospital Corps to fill sixty-three billets on ships of the Military Sea Transportation Service. Photograph released October 26, 1953. Official U.S. Navy photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
