![USN 709137: Yeoman First Class Joan G. Mackie, March 1954. One of the first two U.S. Navy enlisted WAVES to be selected for Officer Candidate School, March 1954. Mackie will report to the school at Newport, Rhode Island in July. Yeoman Mackie enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1949 and since that time has served in Hawaii and France, as well as U.S. Bases. In 1952, she became the first WAVE to be assigned to duty on the Staff of Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic. At the time of the photograph, Yeoman Mackie was on duty with the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Washington, D.C. Photograph released March 15, 1954.
