26-G-4555: Sinking of German U-boat, U-853, May 1945

26-G-4555: Sinking of German U-boat, U-853, May 1945. A Depth Charge raises a geyser off the stern of a Coast Guard manned frigate off Point Judith, Rhode Island, on May 6, 1945. Teaming with three Navy vessels, the Coast Guard manned USS Moberly (PF-63) attacks U-853, which a few hours earlier had torpedoed an American collier with the loss of four lives. Sound contact was made with the submarine by USS Atherton (DE-169) and patterns of depth charges were planted by all ships of the group until wreckage of the marauder boiled to the surface. Official U.S. Coast Guard Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2017/09/05).
