26-G-1977:   Operation Avalanche, September 1943.  Mercy Accompanies Invasions.  Coast Guardsmen in the landing craft carefully prepare the wounded, lashed to their stretchers, for hoisting aboard the Coast Guard manned transport.   A chair from some Italian building has been utilized to prop one man up in his stretcher, a position dictated by the nature of his injuries.  Every effort is made to give proper care to the wounded.
