26-G-1978:  Operation Avalanche, September 1943.  Mercy Accompanies Invasions.  Following the invasion lines, mercy machines are lowered from a Coast Guard manned transport into an invasion craft for transportation to shore.  Coast Guardsmen handle the machines as carefully as if they already contained wounded.  The vehicles, plainly marked with the Red Cross, accompany the troops spearheading the attack against the Germans.   Official U.S. Coast Guard Photograph.
