26-G-92443-6: Operation Avalanche, September 1943. End of the Bridge -- Nose Dive. Down a ramp, leading from an assault landing ship, this Medical Corps truck was taking a nose dive into the surf as a Coast Guard truck was taking a nose dive into the surf as a Coast Guard combat photographer took the picture. Coast Guardsmen piloted the landing craft onto enemy beaches, and then supplies rolled out in a volume that sent the Axis reeling back into Italian mountains. Official Coast Guard Photograph.
