26-G-92443-1:   Operation Avalanche, September 1943.  “Talking” Off Paestum.  A U.S. Coast Guardsman signals to USS LST 356 whose bow doors yawn empty off Paestum, twenty miles south of Salerno, as the invasion gets under way.  This picture shows the open bow doors – hitherto a closely guarded military secret.   The ship has already discharged its cargo of motorized equipment .
