Ticonderoga (CV 14) - Kamikaze attack

Description: View of the extensive damage to the island of the aircraft carrier Ticonderoga (CV 14), which was struck by two kamikazes while operating off Formosa (now Taiwan) on January 21, 1945. Note the stretcher bearing one of the ship’s casualties being lowered down to the flight deck. The first suicide plane crashed through the flight deck, its bomb exploding just above the hangar deck level of the carrier and the second struck the starboard side of the carrier near the island, with Captain Dixie Kiefer, the carrier’s skipper, among those wounded as he stood on the bridge.
