Displayed on the wall near the Emil Buehler Naval Aviation Library is the World War II scoreboard of the carrier USS Hornet (CV-12). The crews of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers, both big and small, that roamed the world's oceans during World War II knew that their primary mission was to support the aircraft that launched from their flight decks. They took pride in the performance of the ship's "main battery." Thus, the combat records on scoreboards noting the number of enemy aircraft and ships destroyed and listing the roll call of battles fought and won were sources of pride to the crew.
