This model depicts USS Kearsarge (CV-33), a carrier named after the famous sloop-of-war that defeated the Confederate raider CSS Alabama during the Civil War. Kearsarge received her baptism of fire during the Korean War and was awarded two battle stars for her service. Kearsarge later served as the recovery ship on two of the six Project Mercury space flights. A unique view of the floating city that is an aircraft carrier, this transparent model, built at the Puget Sound Navy Yard in 1945, provides a perspective on the hundreds of compartments in which over 3,000 men lived and worked.
