Caption: This insignia was adopted in 1964. Its salient features are symbolic of the life of Sam Rayburn. The single white star represents the star of Texas, which Rayburn represented in Congress. The star also represents the Polaris missile's stellar namesake. The gavel and the U.S. Capitol dome are symbolic of "Mr. Sam's" role as long-time Speaker of the House of Representatives. The two crews of the ship are represented by the blue background and gold rope.
