Pistols
Title: Pistols
Caption: Left to right: 1. Colonial American pistol, cal. .56 smoothbore barrel partly octagonal, partly round. Type made in eastern Pennsylvania, occasionally taken on board ships sailing from the Delaware river. Flat-faced Pennsylvania or Kentucky style lock, American maple stock. Brass furniture with early American rendition of British lion on butt. No maker's name visible, but style definitely of American Revolutionary period. Overall length 13 1/2". 2. American pistol of Baltimore provenance, identified as by Halbach of Baltimore though no maker's name visible. Bronze smoothbore barrel with cannon muzzle, brass furniture with very early version of American eagle on buttcap. Conceivably used on board ships out of the Chesapeake. Bronze or brass barrels were preferred for sea duty. 3. Brass barreled British flintlock pistol by Ketland and Co., many of which were used at sea as individual arms. Not an issue pistol. 4. British naval or light dragoon pistol by Ketland and Co., standard 9" smoothbore barrel in .65 cal. A typical issue pistol. While identified as a light dragoon pattern, some of these are believed to have been issued for sea service near the close of the American Revolution.
