NH 94848 USS SARATOGA (CV-3)

USS SARATOGA (CV-3)
Title: USS SARATOGA (CV-3)
Caption: Vought O2U or O3U runs into the aft port gun gallery during a poor landing, circa the early 1930s. Note sailor at right, barely missed by the propeller. Donor's comments, "A plane makes a bad landing. The motor was cut at the time this picture was taken, but continued to run as the diesel engine was hot. The plane landed on the port, aft, 5-inch battery. Note how the propeller cut through the canvas covering the gun and how close the man came to being decapitated. It was positively uncanny how quickly a flight deck could be cleared of men when they knew a bad landing was in the offing. A few men were killed and injured by poor landings during the Saratoga's career as a carrier but none were seriously injured by planes during the time that I served on the Saratoga, said period extended to three tours, a total of about four years".
