26-G-2047: Operation Avalanche, September 1943

26-G-2047:  Operation Avalanche,  September 1943.  They Helped Push the Nazis Back.  These four crew members of a tank lighter attached to a U.S. Coast Guard manned transport helped push the Germans back from the beaches at Paestum, near Salerno.  Manning a 50 caliber machine gun, Coast Guardsman Richard Cook, second from left, during the lighter’s first trip to the beach successfully broke up a Nazi machine gun nest.  From left to right:  Coast  Guardsman Leonard Ruehle; Coast Guardsman Cook; US Navy sailor A.E. Lessard; and US Navy sailor Harry W. Lesson.
