Mark 6 Mine

NMUSN-5296: Mark 6 Mine in museum before shipment.

NMUSN-5296:  Mark 6 Mine.   Artifact, once on display in the World War I exhibit, is being prepared for shipment to the Naval History and Heritage Command’s Curator Branch, Collection Management Facility, at Richmond, Virginia, July 2, 2023.   Official National Museum of the U.S. Navy photograph collection.

During World War I, German U-boat operations in the North Sea needed to be dealt with.  To combat this issue, the U.S. Navy's Bureau of Ordnance developed the Mark 6 Antenna Mine.  Originally developed in July 1917, the Mark 6 mine was formed by two hemispheres of steel welded together at the equator.   The mines were laid between Scotland and Norway in what is known as the North Sea Mine Barrage.  This artifact was on display in the World War I exhibit area.    Transferred to the Naval History and Heritage Command’s Curator Branch, Collection Management Facility, at Richmond, Virginia, it will be cared for by the on-site staff as a rest period for the object.
