When Albert Murray was painting this portrait of Arleigh Burke, he needed a model for the radioman and Charlie Lawrence stepped up and into the painting.  While Mr. Lawrence went on to manage the Combat Art Program (later becoming the Navy Art Collection) the time frame depicted in this painting did not allow African Americans to serve in the rate of radioman.
