While visiting USS Harry S Truman (CVN-75), I got to observe “replenishment at sea,” where a supply ship pulled alongside to send fuel and supplies over to the aircraft carrier. I was interested in the traditional way in which communication still was done between the ships-part of which entailed the use of simple paddles, with colors on each side denoting certain actions. Here a young sailor holds a red paddle as she waits for her shipmates to shoot a line over to the waiting replenishment ship.
