Turkey entered the war on the side of Germany at the end of October 1914 and two days later Russia declared war on Turkey. The Dardanelles Straits were blocked and mined, bottling up the Russian Black Sea fleet. For the next two years, the Turkish fleet, aided by Germany, and the Russian fleet, pounded away at each other.
