80-G-286425 Normandy Invasion, June 1944

Photo #: 80-G-286425 Normandy Invasion, June 1944
Title: Normandy Invasion, June 1944
Description: View of the east end of the Mulberry 'A' artificial harbor off Omaha Beach, showing the Gooseberry breakwater of sunken ships and landing operations in progress. Among the vessels on the beach are the British LCT-735 (at the right end of the clutter of landing craft in the center of the view). The old British battleship Centurian, sunk as part of the breakwater, is in the distance, just to left of center. Photograph taken by the Office of Strategic Services. It was received by the Naval Photographic Science Laboratory on 21 November 1944, but actually taken in June of that year, probably after the big storm that badly damaged the artificial harbor. Note the damaged LCVP and LCPL landing craft in the foreground. This view appears to form the left part of a non-contiguous panorama with Photo # 80-G-286424. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
