Description: (AVD-11), at left Is towed into Kerama Retto harbor, Ryukyu Islands, by a fleet tug (ATF), circa 14 April 1945. Thornton had been heavily damaged on 5 April 1945 in a collision with USS Ashtabula (AO-51) and USS Escalante (AO-70). Note the deep vertical gash in her starboard side, amidships. LCT-1409 is passing by in the foreground. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
