Caption: A Grumman F6F-3 "Hellcat" fighter bursts into flames as its pilot cuts his engine while making an emergency landing, 24 November 1943, during the Gilberts Operation. The pilot, Lieutenant Junior Grade A.W. Magee Jr., was unaware of the fire as he landed. Flames were put out in 1m 30sec. with no casualties. The plane was Bu No. 66101.
